Actually, the muted parts in Miraculous Mandarin, and Mahler 9 work extremely well - I wouldn't want to play those opened. We all know plenty of stupid parts of course. I think a lot of players simply play too quiet with a mute in. It's my opinion that one needs to compensate a bit, and not be afraid of making a noise you're not used to hearing. The smart composers know that's what they're looking for - a different color (not just softer). That's why I personally like a wood mute. They're a pain in the --- to play, but they come up with a really nice and interesting color. Just one person's insane opinion.
