As a former organ tuner, with lots of experience setting temperments with tuning forks: it's best to hit the fork on your knee or elbow and then listen by placing the the butt of the fork on the flap of skin just in front of the ear canal. Never hit a tuning fork on a hard surface! The resulting dents will alter the pitch of the fork! BTW, tuning forks are available in a variety of pitches from a piano supply house.....
