While there are instances where someone specifically not invited to an audition ended up winning, there are probably more instances of people being denied an audition, or worse yet, being allowed to play one excerpt, followed by a loud, annoyed, "THANK YOU!" I wouldn't call that being listened to. I have a friend who crashed the Cleveland principal trombone audition of 10 or so years ago. He played, and was cut immediately. This time around, as a much more mature and seasoned musician and an eminently qualified candidate for the job, he was flatly denied an audition. Unless you are the second coming of tubagod, you're better off not crashing.
