Martins are surely rare enough, and were never common. Martin upright basses also have a fine reputation. The set of 10-12 made for the Navy Band in the late 1950s are wonderful horns - a friend has one. The Martins look a whole lot like Conns, without the short action valves (and in this case a fixed bell). Pictures and illustrations I have seen of Martin sousaphones look a lot like Conn 38Ks (i.e. regular valves), too, in the wrap. I have even heard speculation that Martin basses and sousaphones may have been built by Conn or used Conn mandrels.
