No one can be forced into playing or sounding 1 way. The best one can hope for is to present good, sound concepts (no pun intended) in an enjoyable way and have the students do it because it is the best way and sounds the best. That is the way the best teachers achieve the results they achieve. Force people to do things your way and all you get are disgruntled, unhappy students.

Marching in a marching band or in a drum corps is important but in my opinion, if the music is not Number 1, then whether the group marches well or not is immaterial. Location of the sections is important for overall balance and again that is a musical consideration and not a marching one.

We can all tell that the best organizations are the ones that focus on the basics and don't get too fancy. Fancy happens when the basics are done very, very well.
