Pre war Yorks were designed by Bill Johnson, York's foreman who eventually became part of a group that bought the company from the York family then sold it to Carl Fischer in 1940. The York Master was made by Boehm an Minel after the war. I really doubt if Bill Johnson had anything to do with the B-M design.

What we have here is the use of the York name. The B-M instrument only shares the York name, not J.W. York and Sons. Today a company is marketing student instruments (not tubas) made in China with a York name. Comparing pre war Yorks, York Masters and China Yorks is like comparing apples and oranges. Grand Rapids and B-M Yorks are both excellent horns but different animals.
