I have the time to play some on the 983 and the 982. First of all the smaller 17" bell of the 983 gives a more focused sound, and the 19 inch bell of the 982 gives a broader sound, somewhat more like a big tuba. These are versitle tubas, but think of the 983 as more of a solo horn, and the 982 as more of ensemble horn. The 982 is even more open down low becuase of the larger leadpipe. While they don't replace a large CC, they do sound good in Orchestra as an alternative to a medium or small CC, or sometimes even the F.
