Noise in a breath always indicates an obstruction of some kind. Either the air passages are blocked by a medical condition or the throat is not open enough. In either case, a good teacher can assist with good breathing techniques.
A small clue: making noise to take a big breath causes more tension and doesn't allow for a larger amount of air to enter the lungs. Muscle development in the breathing apparatus will help with air intake and exhalation.
another clue: hyperventilating on purpose will serve you better to make the long note or phrase. If you need another breath, take it.
