At some point in the future, you will probably end up determining that the first horn you buy isn't the horn for you and you'll sell it. Maybe it was at the time, but it won't be when you mature more as a player and have a better idea of the equipment that best suits you. Therefore, you are best off looking for a good deal on a used horn that you can get back close to the money you paid for it when you decide to sell it.

For a college horn, you should be looking for 4/4 sized, good scale, something you can play in front of a tuner for a bit before spending that kind of money. IMHO, the 3/4 Rudi CC (it's a big 3/4), Mirafone 188, Mirafone 186, Meinl Weston 2145, Conn 52j, or 56j are some very good candidates in this department, and all come up used from time to time (though less often for the Rudi). You should be looking for the right horn for YOU and NOT a horn that you HEARD was good.

With that said, the opening bid is around 20% less than the price of the new equipment in that package but that does not include shipping. IMHO, If it can be had for the opening bid, then it may be a deal. _I_ (meaning me personally) would let it go.

A BRAND SPANKING NEW Mirafone 186 CC can be had for less than that opening bid. There were a few Mirafone 188's (arguably the most in-tune 4/4 CC made) for sale used for a lot less than that. If you meticulously peruse the websites of the tuba vendors listed in the "shops" section of this BBS you'll run into those 188's.
