Thank goodness we have progressed. Good point. As suggested in your #2 above, I have heard people make the case that George Washington was a racist using today's values vs. actions and attitudes from 200+ years ago.
The big difference is that I don't expect that many would try to paint Washington as a monster, but there is no doubt, based on any sane person's values, that Hitler certainly was.
Of course they are still beating up on Jefferson, again using today's values to judge an 18th century man, but thats another story.
