As for the stand, make sure it is braced and/or secured in the middle of the podium. Nothing worse than an emotive conductor squeaking, creaking, and whining to the music because of tactile movements, gestures, etc. It is very distracting to the person standing on such a sound-board (where you can usually feel as well as hear each extra-musical effect) and even will sag like grandma's attic bed over time and a little weight.
