Sorry, I was so busy gushing that I forgot the main point of my post. Mike's playing was superb even as a kid, but it's doubtful that he could even get a foot in the door today. Today's excessive credential-consciousness is a shame, but what else can an overwhelmed audition committee do when there is a huge number of applicants, many of whom know that they can't possibly make the grade? On the other hand, what other way is there for a serious player to get audition experience other than auditioning?
