Bravo!

I, too, love to play. I do most of my performing without the consideration of renumeration. But I can see the need to discourage people from asking me to stand in the sun for four hours to play Rocky Top when some drunken redneck opens his birthday present. For that, they must pay.

Now when I play at church, or do caroling at nursing homes and day care centers, or play at schools, or concerts in the park, or weddings of friends... that I do for free. When people do not even know how to spell "euphonium" they are a little reticent to pay... but after they hear me play, they are appreciative. My quartet plays for free, almost exclusively. And all of this for the love of playing. I usually give my big band and combo checks back to the leader after the show, unless I had to hire a babysitter (who makes more on the night than I did.)
