This is something that I've thought about a lot lately. As a student, the notion that I may end up as a 'decent' player is something that I am unable to avoid. This is frightening, considering the hours I've invested into practice, or the money I've invested into instruments, music, lessons, festivals and two years of college to prepare me for what may be a 'decent' career. I would enjoy knowing how other successful players managed to sift through the encouragement to find the truth, as I am trying to do. I realize that there are no concrete rules, and that the odds of me being the next tuba master are slim to none. So how did other players find the difference between a teacher wanting you to succeed, you wanting to succeed, and you actually having the chops and ability to succeed?
