In the past, the "proper" horn sound was one that had been bounced off a wall before reaching the audience. In a master class given by Phil Myers a few years ago at the Midwest horn workshop in Oklahoma, Mr. Myers sat facing the stage right wall, which put his bell sort of at 45 degrees facing out into the audience; not directly, but far from the "bounce the sound off the back wall" concept. I like both kinds of sound from the horn, veiled and brilliant, but I find that the brilliant blends better with a brass quintet. For a woodwind quintet, I would have advised the opposite.
