Not to mention the personal dynamics. Even if you've heard the orchestra, you may not know the people you'll be working with. I've passed up higher salaries with prestigous companies to avoid spending my days in the presence of unpleasant people.
BTW, I don't know anyone in the alluded-to orchestra or its management, and I'm not suggesting that my observation applies in any way to the recent case. It's just one more legitimate reason why a person might audition but then pass on the job.
