I've attended a few auditions. No individual should take offense to these comments, because they are general in nature:

At the auditions I've attended where all of the applicants showed up at once, I could usually predict the finalists simply by overhearing warm-up routines. Over the years, I simply have not heard that many qualified applicants who have shown up for auditions. Usually, I've heard three or four qualified applicants per audition.

Though unqualified applicants show up for all instruments' auditions, I believe in the case of most other instruments, committees often have the luxury of choosing amongst "styles", "timbres", etc. In the case of tubas, such esoteric choices aren't as avaiable. React to these remarks as you will.
