You're right about that! I had been a member of the church in the town where I used to live for about seven years when they decided to organize an "orchestra". The auditions were heard by the director and the pianist, VERY close friends who had known for years that I played the tuba -- and occasionally teased me about it. I came in to try out and played a melodic etude out of Blazhevich. When I was done, I looked at their faces -- they were dumbfounded. "Wow", the pianist said, clearly dazed, "I thought those things only went 'oom-pah'."
When people hear the tuba played well (or in my case even FAIRLY well), they understand.
Joe Baker, who thinks it is important that we don't "blow" the chance to let people hear what a tuba can do.
