I used to do freebies if I thought I would benefit from the experience: whether the music or musicians made the event of great musical value. Later, I had to decide if free or even low-paying gigs were worth it based on the fun factor.

Now, some of the most fun I have is playing for free, whether with a good friend on some duets, or several friends in some quintet music (and I have yet to be paid for practicing--no one would pay to hear that!)

But performing for free, with an audience, is now better left to someone who needs the experience. I won't (and I hope this thread doesn't) go into the whole moral/religious/political ethic of whether or not one "should" accept a free gig...but we shall see.
