I ended buying a Sony MZ-N707 and have been pretty happy with the results so far. My only big complaint is the inability to set the recording levels on the fly--something that is standard on the Sharp minidisc recorders.
I may look for a Sharp this summer for that reason. I believe the model that is comparable is the MT-190 (~$200 range).
I also have the Sony entry-level mic that works pretty well, but the Audio Technica seems to be the mic of choice by many. That, too, is on the list for this summer.
