I had played horns, that somebody else had put a million dents in, for over thirty years, and I was tired of it. So, when I my company relocated me, since I had a bunch of equity built up in my house, I took a few grand of that cash and bought my Mel (VMI Neptune, rotary), instead of putting all of it into the new house. That was 3 years ago and I can honestly say that I enjoy my Neptune much more than I would an extra closet or a bigger patio. Like Rick in an earlier post, my loving wife is very tolerant of my tuba "habit". This doesn't help a young performance major, but then, I chose my path to be a geeky engineer instead of dedicated music pro.
Best of luck in your quest.
