I was so saddened by this that I blew my own alias in my previous message.
But I have contacted Detective Bergson through legitimate channels, and he has responded. He tells me that a search warrant discovered over $20,000 worth of stolen instruments in our friend's possession, and he is trying to locate others. He has apparently already received some responses from his post.
So, it seems to be on the level. Sad, sad, sad.
