Well, I try to play all the major scales three or four octaves every day. The minor scales I do less frequently.
Here is my gripe about playing scales from memory: Younger students eventualy catch on that they can play C# Major using the same fingerings as Db Major (etc.). When they do catch on to this they stop playing the written notes of the C# scale. This defeats the whole purpose of learning the scales, sense the first time a piece of music in C# is placed in front of them, they're lost.
(I know, I know. I don't think I've ever seen anything but etudes written in C#.)
