I hate to say it, but there are a lot of tuba players and (not to mention people from all other walks of life) who have found this to be their reality.

A LOT of people work their tails off for many years and never quite make it to the "big gig". So the answer to your rhetorical question is, "yes, it is the reality of 95% of people who really try for the "big gig".

And then add to that the trend of the "Freeway Philly" where the local guy gets aced out by the big city guys when auditions happen for whatever decent gig there is in town. These guys travel from city to city, hundreds of miles, to "make a living".

Funny thing, those Freeway dwellers moan and groan about the "local orchestra" while they take work away from the local players...But, again, this is all a part of the picture of reality you seem to miss.
