For a lyrical yet technical challenge, I would highly recommend getting a copy of the Bach Cello Suites for unaccompanied Cello. This is a great collection of pieces that are fantastic for improving a lot of difficulties in playing. With the large intervals, endurance, as well as improving your listening skills. There are edited versions of this for trombone etc., but I would suggest working from the original cello version, and make your own edits as you go along to help with phrasing, breathing, etc. If you are one of the luck ones who has mastered the art of circular breathing, this will help maintain that as well. Try playing these down the octave, then at written the octave. I guarantee that this will last you from your freshman year to the end of your tuba career.

For Concertos, why not try a more "audience accepting" list of works such as:
Ellerby Concerto
Barnes Concerto
Whilhelm Concertino
