Having quickly read your post, I think I agree with your views.

Imagine what would happen to the Canadian Brass if two or three of their musicians decided (when it came to promoting the group) "Hey, it ain't my job."

Though orchestras hire "publicity" folks, let's face it - these folks can't (without a lot of willing cooperation) establish personal relationships between the orchestra musicians and their patrons...

... and there's nothing like having the audience feel like "patrons" rather than just "ticket holders" and these patrons not only knowing the NAMES of the orchestra musicians, but knowing them as PEOPLE as well.
