His way of teaching seems kind of old school. That way seems like it would produce an inconsistent sound, which is something you don't want. You want a consistent sound right? Just think of the ideal sound in your head and keep that same sound throughout all registers. Of course, the opening of the embouchure will be smaller as you get to the higher notes, but try to keep the sound the same throughout all registers. For me, the embouchure will be smaller when you get higher, but I still keep the throat and the back of my mouth pretty open, the sound stays full and round when I remember to do that. When I don't remember, my teacher notices and tells me to keep the sound consistent. I figured that out for myself to keep it consistent. He just says do it, and when he said "keep the sound consistent and round" it just clicked with me to do it that way. Faster air for the higher notes.
It may or may not work for you.
Experiment some.
I also suggest you get some lessons with some of the recent orchestral tuba players.
Good luck.
