The whole idea of the mouthpiece is to reduce the horrible high harmonics that the typical tuba mouthpiece produces. If you want to sound like a bass harmonica, then you will use the standard type mouthpiece. Believe me, the middle register sound you dislike sounds a lot more like a cornet or flugelhorn on the Dr. Young mouthpiece than on a standard pea shooter.

To test this out. Play America at 1/4 tempo in the middle register and record it a tape speed of 1.875 inches/second and play it back at 7.5 inches/per second. With the standard mouthpiece it will sound like a harmonica, whereas with the Dr. Young mouthpiece it will sound like a trumpet.
