Sousa's tuba section would split the articulation styles to acheve a pizzicatto string bass effect. Some of the players would play short, and some would play legato.
It works. Otherwise, even though the laws of acoustics prevents it, just imitate a string bass as best as you can.
Frankly, I'm surprised to see people limiting themselves and being adversarial towards their directors. Great music can't be made that way.
