In fact, tenure is not available in most professions. My own employer can fire me because they don't like my belt buckle or the way I tie my shoelaces. Like most people, I'm always auditioning for my job. It's called "employment at will" and it's the law in most states for non-unionized professional positions, particular those in management. The only recourse for the employee is a wrongful termination complaint based on a protected employment factor, such as race or sex.

But the longer one holds a position, the greater their positive good-will balance, and the more they can screw up without going negative. I find that most people who are not going to work out reveal this clearly within the first six months. Then it is best to cut them loose so they can move on with their lives with an employer that is a closer match and not to string them along by trying to make them into something they are not.
