sorry to hear of your loss. f.w.i.w. Amtrak Baggage Express policy specifically exempts musical instruments from oversize/weight penalties. Rates are based on 50-pound imcrements. Paul, while I realize this fact does not help your described situation, it is important enough for anyone who may consider using them for shipping that I mention them here. Check out www.amtrak.com, search for the Baggage Express pages, and read the terms and conditions. Print them and take them with you to the depot. These big trains are capable of hauling massive freight loads, and certainly the clerk who refused your (60-80 pounds tops) package made a mistake. Don't lose hope yet Paul, the horn may yet turn up. If not, file a formal claim for the stated value of your instrument with the carrier, and contact the player's legal for some union-dues-paid advice.
