I agree that the way to make a "plucked string bass" sound is more like a fortepiano (the dynamic notation, not the instrument ;-) ) than a stacatto. The trick is to listen closely to what a good string bass section sounds like (probably different than what one thinks) , then listen to a RECORDING of yourself. The effect out in the room is quite different than what you probably think you're doing. I find that the "plucked string bass" effect is good for jazzy pieces, letting the bass line be heard yet leaving room for the rest of the ensemble....
