I haven't heard a slew of different recordings of Prokofiev 5, but I really enjoy the copy I own of Simon Rattle conducting the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra on EMI. Overall, the orchestra achieves a very unified and electrifying sound. There isn't an overwhelming amount of tuba sound on the disc, but you certainly won't miss it, either. Mostly, the presentation of the music is superb, and keeps you listening from beginning to end, without a down moment. That could just be Prokofiev, though I think Rattle has something to do with it. There's also a scorching recording of the Scythian Suite on the same disc.
