Here's the story of the "HUNKY BRUTE" tee shirt, as related to me by a participant in the drama. Bernstein was rehearsing the NYP. There came a big entrance for the low brass, but their attention had lapsed, and they didn't play. Bernstein launched into a rage, "My God, what's wrong with you people, can't you make a simple entrance, etc., etc.." Catching himself, he quieted down, looked at them sheepishly and cooed, "You hunky BRUTES!" Much laughter on stage.
The players in question pooled their resources, had a set of Hunky Brute tee shirts made and presented one to the Maestro. He thanked them graciously, modeled it for everyone, lotsa laughs all around. At that very rehearsal he busted their **** for 20 minutes on the 4th movement chorale from Tchaik 6. Great story. A New York story worthy of O. Henry.
