The statement "There is no such thing as durable spot re-plating" is in error. Spot plating is performed in many plating shops and if done properly is very durable.
The spot plating kits found in hobby shops are not up to the task in cases where hand contact is expected as it would come off quite rapidly. However, even in the case where it would be performed on a newly engraved surface, even one of the simple hobby kits would be able to do a good job, and seeing how the cuts made by the graver are not normally subject to contact with one's hands, the lightest of spot plating would last indefinitely.
