Regardless of what was in the hood when Ravel did his orchestration, to say the use of Alex/german-type horns when performing the Bydlo is "skewed understanding" would only be correct if something other than the sound is what is important. The three or four "French tubas" I have seen may be "correct" ... but from behind a screen I'd wager most on this list would prefer the sound of those sweet-sounding Alex tenor tubas any day!
