I understand that a turning moment would be created by pushing on an offset valve, but short action valves have a pin opposite the valve stem that absorbes this turning force and prevents the piston itself from experiencing side forces. The side force impacts the pin against the slot in which it rests. This is what I was trying to describe above. Here's a photo of a short action valve that illustrates my point.
