I could not say for sure that it has happened in the Derby, but it has occurred (more than once)that a race has been started and horses subsequently ran the distance and passed the finishing post but with no result - a NO RACE being the official judges decision.

As for the BSO spot, or any other similar one, a potential applicant would probably be wise, if the former player were of the stature of Chester in the job, to very closely study the precise sound and style of that player and emulate it at an audition. If the panel felt like they were listening to the person being replaced they might feel more comfortable about hiring the person who made them feel "at home".

As Harvey Phillips said recently when we had a long chat, there are a lot of players around now who are very accomplished technically, but really great musicians playing tuba are as rare as ever. One day one of the rare ones will audition, the committee and music director will feel comfortable and the job will be filled.
