Perhaps it is good advice to all of us to base our opinions on our own best and most objective views of our own personal observations and experiences rather than on the haphazardly retold observations and opinions of others.
Addressing another point:
I ain't no lawyer, but I don't think a statement is libelous if something which is stated is indeed true and can be proven beyond a doubt to be true. The test, of course, is the "proven beyond a doubt" part...and, as a practical matter, there is the even more practical issue of "Is it worth it?" (choosing our battles, etc.)
As to your original remark...
