with cerveny the rule of thumb is the older the better. Most of the horns that were built before 1989 were good to great, and after that they can go from terrible to great. the way to tell the vintage of the horn is to look at the spatulas. The ones that look like flat sticks are the newer ones, and the old ones have a round, sloping look to them.
The 601 can be great, but it would be nice if you could play it first or have somebody play it for you. id it an ebay thing? if so maybe there is somebody here on the list that is near the horn and can give it a toot for you.
