This "cantus firmus" ago part of the old catholic liturgy and was sung to the dead mass or the defuncts' commemoration.
Today is sung very rarely in 2 November, festivity of the dead men near the catholic religion. The more famous topic is that one described from Berlioz in the " fantastic Sinfonia " but nearly all the composers ne have to set to music one to the inside of the mass from Requiem (Mozart, Cherubini, Verdi, Perosi, etc.).
