The pic solo in Stars and Stripes repeatedly calls for a trill from Eb to F in the staff. I decided to perform the solo on my CC for comic effect. I use a double whole step fifth valve and had extremely good luck playing the Eb 23 and adding the fifth to go up to F. It was actually pretty well in tune too. ;b I'm not sure how that trill would work out on a single whole step set up.
Not actually posing any new solutions to the original problem but heartily agreeing that fifth valves come in handy more often than one would expect.
