The Dies Irae is used as a part of a number of Requiem masses, or liturgical music in honor of the dead. There are several Dies Iraes, since several composers have used it. The one I am most familiar with is the one in the Berlioz Requiem, which uses a large orchestra, enormous chorus, 4 brass bands (one on each back corner of the stage and one on each side of the balcony), and a ton of tympani, bass drums, and cymbals. All of these forces are used once, when the text gets to the end of the world and the beginning of judgment day. If you've never heard it, you need to. By the way, it uses three tubas in modern performances, although I believe Berlioz marked all of the parts for opheclide.
