A practice mute is intended to reduce the sound coming out of the horn to allow practice without disturbing those around you. It also adds resistance to the horn which can help build endurance.

A performance mute is intended to change the timbre of the sound coming out of the horn, not to stop the sound. They are not interchangeable. One should never use a practice mute in performance when a mute is called for.
