In my opinion you are under no obligation to offer a trial period as a private seller. Many stores offer a trial period, but they are selling instruments as a business. The way they generally do it is the buyer pays up front for shipping and the cost of the instrument. If the buyer decides not to keep it, it's their responsibility to pay for return shipping. The store then checks for damage before refunding the purchase price and can deduct the cost of any repairs from the refund if there was any damage.

As an imdividual you generally don't have the resources to deal with a trial period. If the buyer isn't willing to buy it as a final sale, you can sell to someone else. I have never offered a trial period with any instrument that I have sold, and I have sold over a dozen over the years. I just make it clear up front that it is a final sale. It is then the buyers problem if they decide they don't like it.
