I own two Martin sousas that are very different in character. One is a 1925 model which is quite streamlined and fairly light. This horn has lightning response and can really cut through. The other is a 1937 model that is much heavier. This horn "booms" more than it cuts and at times I've also thought it to be inefficient. I guess I've always thought that the sound was worth the inefficiency. It's also important to have the original bits that form the leadpipe on the neck, as they are different from modern bits, (the old ones really fit well and have screw tensioners on them). Also, I've never bought an old Martin that didn't need a valve job!,(I own 9 of 'em). The 1925 example has the "shield" emblem on the bell while the 1937 has the "searchlight" design engraved around the name "Martin".
