You don't say how far between your teeth you place your tongue, but I don't think that that in and of itself is that big of a deal. If you get the results, why change?
I know of at least one prominent teacher that teaches this as a tongueing method.
If it is causing you problems elsewhere, try altering your method in very small increments until you find that happy medium where everything works well, instead of trying to make such a radical change all at once.
