Kava would not be a good idea. Besides the fact that it is like drinking swamp water, it tends to numb the mouth giving a sensation rather like a dentist's anaesthetic. (having only just returned from the fang farrier I can tell you that doesn't make for good tuba playing. From experience I CAN tell you that Kava is not helpful for playing tuba. If you were to study the native Fijians and their use of Kava, you would find that continued use can lead to some serious health problems. Like so many psychotropic drugs it can become habit forming (not addictive like heroine) and many of the islanders have tended to prefer a "bowl of grog" to doing any work to solve their problems. If you look at the social upheaval in the South Pacific in the last 20 years or so and correlate it with the use of Kava and such you will find a strong link.

Probably THE BEST approach to performance nerves is to have your program down absolutely pat and do some less stressful performances to build your confidence on the basis of success. This is not to say that Beta Blockers, etc can not be helpful for some people in some situations.
