It won't hurt for your son to play trombone music down an octave. He will probably be very good at it since he already plays music. Most tuba etudes are basically trombone music written down an octave anyway. The thing is though, I feel it is important to work on tone when I teach tuba. The book mentioned on my other post will work for that. Also, be sure to have him play a lot of low notes below the staff. That is what playing tuba os all about. You can also look for some easy tuba solos at your local music store to help spruce up the beginner stuff.
