For me it's the other way around; an up-tempo four-beat walking bass line wears me out pretty fast on string bass but I can go all night on tuba. (Working with Wild Bill Davison the gigs sometimes went seven hours, and I left the bass at home.) The most important thing you can do to learn dixieland or any other form of improvised music is to play along with recordings -lots of them- in the privacy of your own home. Most of that time goes to developing fluency and learning lots of tunes. Some of the time should be spent on deliberately trying to push the tempo or to hold it back, so you get a better idea of where the middle ground is. Another helpful activity is playing melodies in every key. You really learn a lot about a song that way, and you also develop a musical vocabulary.
